EMPLOYEE'S SAFETY AND HEALTH |
|
| |
Our
ultimate goal is to become an injury free company for both our employees
and contractors with our current priority being clearly focused on
sustaining a total recordable injury rate (TRR)
) below our current target of 1.3 for employees and 2.5 for contractors,
and on reducing our Days Away From Work injury rate (DAFW)
below our current target of 0.5 for employees and 1.5 for contractors.
In an effort to ensure continuous safety improvement with a long-term
target focused on being injury and incident free, all locations worldwide
implemented the Flexsys Zero Injury / Incident Program (ZIP).
This improvement initiative started in 1998 when a group of Flexsys employees
were chartered by Flexsys senior management to review the various behaviour
based safety programs available, with a remit to improve and sustain Flexsys’
overall safety performance. It is well known that most accidents are caused
by unsafe acts, and therefore a key element of the program was to focus on
changing both the Flexsys employees’ and contractors’ attitudes and behaviours
toward safety.
Location-driven programs were implemented with input by management and
involvement by employees at all levels being essential.
Safety performance improvements have since been demonstrated by many Flexsys
locations worldwide, but in order to ensure this performance is sustained,
key elements of the program are being reviewed on a regular basis with new
focus areas implemented in order to compliment the program whenever necessary.

PROCESS SAFETY |
|
| |
Plant and process safety is of paramount importance to Flexsys. Process safety
focuses on reviewing, in detail, all new processes and equipment prior to being
installed at a Flexsys manufacturing location. Similarly, all process
modifications are subjected to the most rigorous hazard and operability
studies and risk assessments prior to start-up. Once installed, processes
are continually being assessed for up-keep of standards or, as knowledge
and regulations change, to identify areas for further improvement. Each
manufacturing location is also responsible for suitable site-specific training
programmes in support of process safety.

COMMUNITY AWARENESS & EMERGENCY RESPONSE |
|
| |
Each Flexsys manufacturing location has its own Location Emergency Response Plan
which details the required response to limit the consequences of potential
accidents. Emergency response plans are developed for both on-site and off-site
involvement of appropriate emergency services, local authorities and neighbouring
companies. Emergency response plans are tested on a regular basis and information
is provided to near neighbours on what action should be taken by them in the
unlikely event of an emergency.
24-Hour Transportation Emergency telephone numbers are provided on Flexsys
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs), packages and labels. These numbers can
be called at any time in the event of transport incidents that involve a
Flexsys product.
These Emergency Contact Numbers are:
For Europe & Asia Pacific: + 31 5706 79211
For North America, Call CHEMTREC:
· 1-800-424-9300 [toll-free for USA and Territories]
· or 703-527-3887 [elsewhere; Toll calls accepted]
We have Material Safety Data Sheets and Product Data Sheets available on line.

POLLUTION PREVENTION |
|
| |
We
continually strive to improve our environmental performance and reduce
our waste generated and energy use by whatever means possible. This
also includes the introduction of new process technology, whenever
possible such as the 4-ADPA process at the Antwerp plant in Belgium.
The 4-ADPA process is not only very efficient, but also reduces by-product
waste by 95% compared to conventional processes.
All waste streams to air, land and water are routinely monitored. Emissions
data from all manufacturing locations is collated and reported to the local
authorities on an annual basis.
In addition, the majority of our manufacturing locations are now registered to
the internationally recognised environmental management standard
ISO 14001. A significant part of the requirements
for registration to this standard is a rigorous examination of the location’s
environmental procedures and practices by an accredited external and totally
independent authority with follow-up audits of the location's Environmental
Management System twice a year.

DISTRIBUTION
|
|
| |
The
safe transport and distribution of products is of paramount importance
to Flexsys. When any of our products leaves one of our many warehouses
a great effort is made to ensure that it is the correct packaging
and the right container, and is correctly labeled with all necessary
documentation to suit the mode of transport required to enable it
to arrive at its destination.
European legislation now requires companies to have fully trained
and qualified Dangerous Goods Safety Advisors, and Flexsys has qualified
DGSAs at all key locations throughout Europe.
Transport incidents are monitored and improvement opportunities always
shared not only by Flexsys but also by the chemical industry as a
whole.
